Volans: The Dream That Chose Us

Why our next sailboat bears this mysterious name.

We were anchored at Curva da Jurema, a lovely spot in Vitória, Espírito Santo, doing some boat repairs and getting ready for the next crossing, when suddenly...
“Would you like some coffee?” asked a young man who had just approached Mintaka in his inflatable dinghy.
“Why not?” we replied, already excited to meet a new neighbor at anchor.
One of the things we love most about life at sea is the sense of community among sailors, people who recognize in each other a shared passion for the ocean and all the challenges that come with that love.
His name was Deivis, a very friendly and smily human.
He sat in our cockpit, and we started chatting.
To our surprise, the conversation wasn’t about weather forecasts, life aboard, or diesel engines. In just fifteen minutes, fueled by coffee and curiosity, we dove into deep topics about the power of the mind, fear, and the beliefs that govern the realization (or non-realization) of our dreams.
Before we knew it, Deivis was giving us a free, fascinating mini-lecture on NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming), one of his specialties.
We quickly realized he was a special person: sharp-minded, articulate, and with a life story that could inspire anyone.
As he said goodbye, he invited us to dinner the next evening aboard his sailboat. Once again, we said yes.
Stunned by that unexpected encounter, Chris and I looked at each other in silence for a few moments, trying to grasp what had just happened, until one of us joked:“So… what will tomorrow’s lecture be about?”
Between laughter and gratitude for life’s mysteries, we set an intention for something we’d always wanted to learn but had never really invested time and energy in.
“Quantum physics,” suggested Chris, without any idea whether Deivis actually knew anything about that vast and complex subject.
If a short coffee chat could go that deep, then a long dinner together sounded promising.

The next day, after wrapping up our chores, we paddled our dinghy eagerly toward Fúria, Deivis’ sailboat. He greeted us with a warm hug, a glass of wine, and the delicious aroma of dinner already in the air.
That usual small talk people make when they barely know each other simply didn’t happen. Our mutual interests in subjects like personal development and psychology instantly connected us. Soon, we were telling him about our dream with the Pirates of Love:
“We dream of a large two-masted sailboat, with a central cockpit and an aluminum hull, capable of hosting a crew of 15 to 20 people. A ship prepared to sail around the world—to any sea, even the high latitudes. Onboard, we’ll create an autonomous zone for free learning, where we can rethink and reinvent how to live on Earth.”
At the end of this magical sharing, we made the classic mistake of adding:
“But unfortunately, we have no idea how we’ll ever buy such a boat. We don’t have the money, and one like that costs a fortune!”
Deivis immediately interrupted us:
“Be careful with your words. They have power.”
“Let me explain something to you,” he said.
And that’s how that night’s free lecture began. Surprisingly, or maybe not, the topic was Quantum Physics.
Wait, what?What are the odds?
It was exactly what we had asked the universe for, even as a joke, the day before.
But to the universe, there are no jokes. Intentions are intentions.
So, be careful what you ask for.
Somehow, Deivis had heard our wish and was ready to share everything he knew.
We spent hours talking about quantum physics, drinking wine, laughing, and connecting all those ideas to our dream.
He was genuinely invested in helping us make it real, sharing everything he knew about the manifesting power of the mind, the importance of language, and, according to him, the key to success:
“The secret of success is the ability to keep dreaming,” said Deivis.
He backed his words with scientific, quantum, philosophical, theoretical, and spiritual evidence, showing us that it’s truly possible to manifest anything we dream of. Every human being has this power. It should be a mandatory subject in school, but somehow, it’s missing from the curriculum.
“And besides,” he added, “who said that your next sailboat has to be expensive? Maybe it’ll be given to you as a gift. Or maybe you’ll make all the money you need to buy it. Everything is possible once you believe it’s possible! By declaring to the universe that you won’t have the money, you’re creating a limiting condition for your dream, and signing a contract with failure. Failure, in this sense, is just giving your power away to fear.”
A loving slap in the face, filled with hope. And an unforgettable dinner.
Back on Mintaka, we were deeply moved. We realized that yes, we knew how to dream, but once again, we were filling our minds with conditions, fears, and beliefs that limited the realization of our great pirate dream.
Fear paralyzes. And paralyzed, we would never reach the next boat.
We went to sleep.
The next morning, we woke up buzzing, not only from the transformative conversation the night before, but also because we were about to embark on the crossing of our dreams: from Vitória to Abrolhos, and then Abrolhos to Ilhéus. At least four days at sea, strong winds, whales, breathtaking views, adrenaline, and deep camaraderie among the crew.
Our dear friend Fabinho, a seasoned sailor with his ever-good humor, was ready. Água Viva, our first artist-in-residence, had just come aboard, a cosmic spirit from Espírito Santo, with long brush-like fingers, a captivating voice, and an artistic presence that pulsed with life. We had no idea he’d become the first official member of our sea community. He came for two weeks—and ended up living with us for nearly three months.
From left to right: 1. Gourmet lunch at sea with Fabinho, on a crossing from Búzios to Vitória. 2. Fabinho with the nautical chart, he drew our route and created unique sketches that later became our artwork Travessia. 3.The united crew, now with Água Viva Cósmica, crossing from Vitória to Ilhéus, with an unforgettable stop in Abrolhos.
While preparing the boat, I got a call from Deivis on the beach asking me to meet him there.
I took Mintakinha, our dinghy, and went to see him.
“I just wanted to say goodbye, and give you this gift,” he said, handing me a large rectangular package.
Besides being an entrepreneur, quantum physicist, student of the human mind, cook, and fearless sailor, Deivis is also an artist!
His gift was an artwork he’d made especially for us, between last night’s dinner and that sunny morning.
Did he even sleep? I have no idea. I was stunned.
On the front of the painting, in a vibrant, Romero Britto-style burst of color and life, he had painted Mintaka anchored at Curva da Jurema, Vitória. I was already overjoyed when he asked me to turn the canvas around.
Wow. There it was: Volans!
We had talked so much about our dream that Deivis had manifested our next sailboat in the form of art. He not only named it Volans but also filled the painting with hidden codes, magic, and powerful symbols.
Front: Mintaka in Vitória, ES.Back: Volans, our future sailboat.
He explained the meaning of each symbol, the crazy mathematical formulas, the name Volans, and everything else. I burst into tears.
I couldn’t even explain it all to Chris at that moment, nor could I do it here now. So I asked him to record an audio message, so I’d never forget it.
(It’s just a one-minute recording, worth listening to.)
From that day on, we started calling our next sailboat Volans.
Just like a Pokémon that evolves and changes names, it made sense that Mintaka, a star, would evolve into Volans: a constellation.

Where Volans is in this world, we still don’t know. But it is alive within us. We keep vibrating to attract it every day. At the right time, the time of time itself, it will arrive, or we’ll arrive at it.
Meanwhile, we keep believing in the dream, sailing with courage and purpose, being more impeccable with our words and beliefs, and looking at our painting every day, so we never forget our direction.
Thank you, Deivis, and thank you - Great Mystery, for reminding us of the way back home whenever we drift or forget who we are.
Life passes like the wind. Dreaming is how the soul keeps breathing.
